It’s now 6 weeks since my spiral perm. I went for a little trim yesterday at my regular salon (not where I had the perm done). To my surprise, my stylist told me off for getting the perm (“What are we going to do about this?!”, she said), when she had always told me I shouldn’t have one (which is why I had to get someone else to perm me in the first place). I think she may have been offended that I’d trusted my hair to someone other than herself though, or had so blatantly substituted her judgement for mine…
![]() Anyway, I could not be more delighted with the way my hair looks today. It’s less bulky at the back, the ends have been blunted off to stop them splitting and it really looks fantastic. Obviously the curl has loosened a lot since it was first done, but that’s no problem (in fact, I think the perm is better now it has settled into a softer curl). I still have plenty of movement that can be accentuated by the right styling products. My layers are growing out at the top, crown and sides, and it’s now a sensible length at the back (where previously it was too long for the hair around it). Yes – I’m truly happy with my hair today (very rare for me). I don’t know why people say that their perms are a disaster. I absolutely love mine and once it grows out, all I can think off is getting it done again! Which is why I'm back here seeking some guidance.I don’t want to fry my hair with too much with harsh chemicals. Can just the roots of the hair be permed, or is it an all over job once again? Also, how many months would be a good time to wait before re-perming. I’m not desperate for the service yet. But it’s best to do a bit of research… Thanks in advance to anyone who replies. ![]()

Hi All,
It's really good to see guys discussing hair issues - the girls have had the spotlight for far too long ;) One important point to add to the discussion is that often if you ask your salon they may have a slightly more private area where you can have your hair done for highlights or perms. We for example we have a private area downstairs in our Covent Garden salon where gents can have their hair done in relative or total privacy as you prefer. Busy salons will love you for this as it frees up the main salon area at busy times ;) If your salon doesn't have a private area also consider booking appointments at off peak times when the salon is quieter. Week days (Mon-Thurs) and mornings are best. Hope it helps Andrew

I think that curls are a really hot look right now for both men and women and so, aspiring to be a very curly boy indeed, I am going to have my hair permed on 6 October (unless I whelk out)!
I’m actually quite excited by the prospect, but scared too because I also feel self-conscious as the perm is being done. And what a perm this one will be. I have been growing my hair in hope that the hairdresser will be able to do a spiral perm wind. I have seen this done a couple of times before and it looks awesome. ![]() Small sections of the hair are wound vertically. There will be a lot of curlers in my hair once the wind is finished. And I’m expecting a huge rush of terror once it’s done and the perm lotion is about to be applied. Of course, once the lotion goes on then I really will be passed the point of no return, and will have to accept whatever the result looks like. But I really fancy a curly, jumbled hairstyle, and so must be brave and report to the salon at the arranged time. Wish me luck… ![]()

I have had a perm for ages and every time I go for one I sometimes wonder whether I should go for staight hair again, but then I feel that I would look stange without a perm. Should I keep having my hair permed or not? Is it outdated these days or not? My hairdresser says it depends entirely on your likes and dislikes, and that everything goes these days.
Appreciate your comments, Robert.

Please to here that everything went OK and you are pleased with the end result. I am also a guy that has a perm occasionally, so I know exactly what you feel like sitting in a busy salon with perm rods in your hair. I am booked in this weekend to have a perm (which my wife booked for me) so I am not looking forward to sitting under the hairdryer with curlers in my hair but I am of course looking forward to the end result. My wife is also trying to persuade me to have highlights put in but I havn't said yes to this yet.

I went for it, and it did look great when finished (although I didn't whilst the perm was being done).

Thank you both for your reassurance and advice. I'm going through with the perm this Saturday and will certainly let you know how I get on!

What does it matter what you look like in the salon. Sitting with curlers in your hair, a rubber streaking cap or tin foil in hair all look pretty silly but who cares, its the result that matters. If you haven't already had it done go for it and if you had it done last Saturday just let us Know how you got on.
