It might be a case that your scalp got more sensitive recently.

I would firstly chack with your regular salon if they have by any chance changed the brand of bleach they were using on your scalp.

If you had the test and came postive though, I would stir away from the full tint anyway.

Going for high-lights will be the better option for you at this point.

You could even opt for a more natural blonde with various shades which will make your re-growth easier to handle.

Firstly if you want to have your hair coloured you MUST tell the salon that you've previously had a reaction so that they know to be very very very careful.

Yes in principle highlights don't touch the scalp so they are 'safer' than a tint which covers the whole head and skin. However even if the salon is trying to be careful and make sure the colour doesn't touch the scalp there's still a risk that you must accept that some colour could touch your skin and cause a reaction.

hi i am in a right old state here my hair has always been dyed blonde all over scalp for around 15 years, all of a sudden last month my head, was on fire burning while the colour was on, after i had open sores that weeped for around 24 hours leaving matty substance in hair.
This has never happened before, i have had patch tests that say i am sensitive to PPD (hair Colourant) Do you think i would be safe to have highlights that don't touch the scalp?

i really hate te roots now they look terrible, i am always wanting my hair to look nice, i also suffer with mild excema at the bottom of my scalp near neck line but only very mild, Please help, i'm having a dilema........

Hi there,

Technically there can be no guarantee that colour from foils will not seap through foils. However if done carefully this should not happen.

If you decide to go for it, I would stress the situation with the stylist, who can allow 'breathing space' for the colour to make sure that this does not happen.

I would choose a more senior stylist to be on the safe side.

Hi,

I'm severely allergic to hair dye. I was told by my hairdresser that she regularly uses foils on another client who is also allergic. I am therefore tempted to try it, but at the same time very nervous.

Is it really absolutely safe to have foil highlights in my case, i.e. is there really no chance of the colour touching my scalp somehow?

A patch test needs to be done on the arm or behind the ear, ideally with a number 1.0 (black). it should be kept for 48 hours.

If you are severley allergic to hair dye, upi are most likely to be for all types, as different brands dod not vary that much in their actual ingredients.

You are better-off to stick to foils, as the latter will not touch your scalp.

hi there i want to take a patch test and was told that i had a sevre reaction to hair die so ifi used foils when i died my hair i should be fine. What can i do also were can i get a patch test from??

the skin going a bit pinky, is more about having sensitive skin, rather than an allergic reaction....

If you did have a sevre allergic reaction it would be sore and itchy.

Not a hairdresser myself but want some advice. I usually use Nice n Easy but bought L'oreal preference this time (can't afford salon colour on a regular basis) and decided to do the patch test last night - it was a spot on and leave for 48hr test.
This morning my skin was pink where I did the test but not sore or itchy and not bright red. I do tend to get a bit of a skin reaction with some things anyway, but rinsing off usually works. I don't normally do a patch test with nice n easy which i use every 6 weeks but I reckon I would probably get a pinky reaction with that anyway if I did.
Does anyone know how much is a 'normal' type of reaction for this patch test - does anyone do the test and get no reaction at all?

Took it back to the shop out of fear about stories in the news but all the colours on the shelf had an allergy warning - even shaders and toners. They didn't even have para phenylediamine in (or however it's spelt!!)
